Living and Learning with Technology

 Task 3a - Teacher project

For Assignment 3a, we were assigned a group task (3-4 students per group) and where asked to explore technologies appropriate to teaching and learning and then create and develop an authentic learning experience to share with our colleagues and other per-service teachers.

We formed our group consisting of myself and 3 other students within the unit and we asked to create a small sharable educational resource on an educational topic of our choice. Our group name was LADS being the first letter of each of the group members first name:

L = Leah Potkin

A = Amy Pante'

D = Dianelle Ekins

S = Sarah Fullard

Our group's first meeting for the project consisted of brainstorming ideas for the topic and what sort of educational resource we wanted to develop keeping in mind it had to be an authentic task. We came up with the idea to focus on health and nutrition as it is apparent throughout the curriculum for primary school students. We also agreed that it is extremely important for children to learn about healthy lifestyle choices at any age as they could be responsible to make healthy eating choices and implement them by themselves.

The created activity was designed for years 4 - 5 and asks students to research healthy foods, create a recipe, present the recipe to their peers and then eventually collaborate to create a classroom cookbook. Throughout the activity the students would incorporate numerous sources of technology to create and present their work.

Within the assignment we were ask to create a Wikipage to present our task. This could then be accessed by other pre-service teachers for ideas for their future teaching on different educational topics. We were provided a URL to a central Wikispace by our lectures and tutors.

We were required to develop a 3-5 page authentic learning environment within the Wiki to create our resource. Within my groups space we have a 'Homepage', 'Authentic task overview page', 'Teacher's resource page' and 'Teacher's information page'.

The 'Home page' introduces our educational topic, the student target group (who it is suitable for and links back to the curriculum), provides a description of the authentic task we designed and introduces our group members.

The 'Authentic task overview page' provides an informative overview and summarises the authentic task we created as part of the project.

The 'Teacher's resource page' has a wide range of resources designed for teachers to educate students on nutrition and healthy eating. Resources range from interactive whiteboard resources, websites, movies, podcasts, related documents/journals and social networking sites (twitter, diigo, shelfari). Please view this page below:

Finally the 'Teacher's info page' is where you can find an in-depth description and set of instructions for implementing the authentic task we created. Here you can find a list of equipment, suggested task schedule (with templates) and examples of possible extension activities relating to the task.

Lastly we were required to present our work by creating a narrated online presentation to explain what our resource is about and the making of our resource. We were required to embed a copy of our presentation onto our Wikigroup homepage and then present the narrated video as a group to our peers within our tutorials.
